1. Create a chart showing the divisions and subdivisions of the nervous system.
(Make sure you know the following terms: central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, autonomic and somatic nervous systems, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, and the brain and spinal cord.)
2. Explain the function of the somatic nervous system.
Give an example of an activity under its control.
3. Identify the function of the autonomic nervous system.
Give an example of an activity under its control.
4. Identify the role of the sympathetic nervous system.
Give an example of an activity under its control.
5. Go back to your notes from the health module and explain how the sympathetic nervous system relates to stress. You may also incorporate some knowledge of The Bridge Study.
6. Identify the role of the parasympathetic nervous system.
Give an example of an activity under its control.
7. Identify the main two types of cells found in the nervous system and briefly indicate their function.
8. Draw a picture of a neuron and label [remainder cut off in the image].

Answer

  1. Nervous system divisions:

    1. Central nervous system (CNS): brain and spinal cord.
    2. Peripheral nervous system (PNS): nerves outside the CNS. Its main functional divisions are the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system includes the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions.
  2. The somatic nervous system carries sensory information to the CNS and controls skeletal muscles, primarily for voluntary movement. Example: lifting your hand.

  3. The autonomic nervous system regulates involuntary functions of internal organs, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands. Example: adjusting your heart rate.

  4. The sympathetic nervous system mobilizes the body for action during stress or danger—the fight-or-flight response. Example: increasing heart rate and dilating pupils when frightened.

  5. Stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, increasing heart rate, breathing, and energy availability while reducing digestion. In the classic suspension-bridge study, participants on a frightening bridge appeared more likely to interpret their physiological arousal as attraction to an interviewer. This illustrates misattribution of arousal: stress-related arousal can be mistaken for romantic attraction.

  6. The parasympathetic nervous system supports rest-and-digest functions, conserving energy and restoring routine bodily activity after stress. Example: slowing heart rate or stimulating digestion.

  7. Neurons: receive and transmit information through electrical and chemical signals. Glial cells: support, nourish, and protect neurons; some form insulating myelin around axons.

  8. Simplified labeled neuron:

Dendrites → Cell body (soma, containing nucleus) → Axon (often covered by myelin, with gaps called nodes of Ranvier) → Axon terminals

Dendrites receive signals; the cell body maintains the neuron; the axon carries impulses toward the terminals, which release neurotransmitters to communicate with other cells. The requested labels at the bottom of the image are cut off.
