Jennifer and Sarah took a walk on the shore and collected a total of 120 seashells. After Jennifer gave 1/3 of her seashells to her younger brother, she had the same number of seashells as Sarah. How many seashells did Jennifer give to her younger brother?

Answer

Let the number of seashells Jennifer collected be J and the number Sarah collected be S. We know:

  1. J + S = 120
  2. After giving 1/3 of her seashells to her brother, Jennifer has the same number as Sarah: J - (1/3)J = S

From equation 2, we have:

(2/3)J = S

Substitute S in equation 1:

J + (2/3)J = 120

(5/3)J = 120

J = 120 * (3/5) = 72

Jennifer collected 72 seashells. She gave 1/3 of them to her brother:

(1/3) * 72 = 24

Jennifer gave 24 seashells to her younger brother.
