Atlas and Hercules, two carnival sideshow strong men, each lift 200.-kg barbells 2.00 m off the ground. Atlas lifts his barbells in 1.00 s and Hercules lifts his in 3.00 s. a) Which strong man does more work? b) Calculate which man is more powerful.

Answer

  1. Answer: Both Atlas and Hercules do the same amount of work because they lift the same weight to the same height. Work done is calculated as W = mgh, where m is mass, g is acceleration due to gravity, and h is height. Since all these values are the same for both, the work done is equal.

  2. Answer: Power is calculated as work done divided by time. Since Atlas lifts the barbells in less time, he is more powerful. The power for Atlas is 4000 W and for Hercules is 1330 W.
