Refer to Figure 5. When the system is not in homeostasis (it is broken), what does the body do to maintain (heal) the system?

Answer

The body heals a broken bone through a series of stages:

  1. Hematoma Formation: Blood vessels break, forming a hematoma (bruise) at the fracture site.
  2. Fibrocartilaginous Callus Formation: New blood vessels develop, and a soft callus made of fibrous tissue and cartilage forms.
  3. Bony Callus Formation: The soft callus is replaced by a hard bony callus of spongy bone.
  4. Bone Remodeling: The bony callus is remodeled to form a strong, permanent patch at the fracture site.
