Station #3
Answer the following questions on your answer sheet.
There is currently 9 inches of snow on the ground.
With the thunderstorms today the snow will melt at
a rate of 1.5 inches per hour.
1. Write an equation to represent this situation.
2. Graph the equation from #1
3. What do the slope and y-intercept mean?
4. After how many hours would all of the snow be
melted? Show all of your work.
5. Make a table of this situation to show when all
of the snow would be melted.

Answer

  1. Equation: y = 9 − 1.5x, where x is elapsed time in hours and y is snow depth in inches. The physical domain is 0 ≤ x ≤ 6.

  2. Graph: Label the horizontal axis time (hours) and the vertical axis snow depth (inches). Plot (0, 9), (2, 6), (4, 3), and (6, 0), then connect them with a straight line segment.

  3. Slope: −1.5 means the snow depth decreases by 1.5 inches each hour. Y-intercept: 9 means there are initially 9 inches of snow.

  4. Set the snow depth equal to zero:
    0 = 9 − 1.5x
    1.5x = 9
    x = 9 ÷ 1.5 = 6
    All the snow will be melted after 6 hours.

  5. Table:
    Time (hours) | Snow depth (inches)
    0 | 9
    1 | 7.5
    2 | 6
    3 | 4.5
    4 | 3
    5 | 1.5
    6 | 0
