2. An experiment was performed to determine the velocity v, of sound in air using a resonance tube with end correction c, resonating to a tuning fork of frequency f, when the length of the air column is l. Theory suggests that the relationship between these quantities is:
l = \frac{v}{4f} - c
The following data was recorded.
l/cm | 33.7 | 31.0 | 27.0 | 26.2 | 23.4 | 20.7 | 18.6 | 17.2 | 16.0
f/Hz | 252 | 278 | 315 | 325 | 364 | 410 | 456 | 495 |
a) Plot a suitable graph from which v and c could be obtained. (9 marks)
b) Use the graph to obtain the values of v and c. (8 marks)

Answer

a) Plot a graph of l (y-axis) against 1/f (x-axis). The slope of the graph will be v/4, and the y-intercept will be -c.

b) From the graph, determine the slope (m) and y-intercept (b). The velocity v can be calculated as v = 4 * slope. The end correction c is the negative of the y-intercept, c = -b.
