Q3 Paul travels to his parents’ house and then returns home.
The distance-time graph shows information about Paul’s journey.
[a] What time did Paul start his journey?
Paul stops at a shop along the way.
[b] For how long was Paul at the shop?
[c] How far do Paul’s parents live from the shop?
[d] Work out the total distance Paul travelled.
[e] Work out Paul’s average speed on his journey home.

Answer

  1. [a] Paul started his journey at 12:40.
  2. [b] Paul stopped from 13:00 to 13:10, so he was at the shop for 10 minutes.
  3. [c] His parents live 7 − 4 = 3 miles from the shop.
  4. [d] Total distance travelled = 7 + 7 = 14 miles.
  5. [e] The journey home took 20 minutes (14:10 to 14:30), or 1/3 hour. Average speed = 7 ÷ (1/3) = 21 mph.
