Ex3 The graph shows part of Matthew’s journey to the gym and back.
[a] Find Matthew’s speed on his way to the gym.
Matthew stayed at the gym for 75 minutes before travelling home at 16 km/h.
[b] Complete the distance-time graph.
Ex4 Lucy leaves home at 08:00. She walks at a speed of 4mph for 15 minutes before immediately running at 8mph for a further 45 minutes.
She then stops for half an hour. Lucy then sets off home and arrives at 10:45.
[a] How long in total was the cyclist stationary during his journey?
[b] How far did the cyclist travel in total?

Answer

  1. Ex3 [a]

    Matthew travels 12 km in 1.25 hours. Speed = 12 ÷ 1.25 = 9.6 km/h.

  2. Ex3 [b]

    He leaves the gym at 1.25 + 75/60 = 2.5 hours. The return journey takes 12 ÷ 16 = 0.75 hours. Extend the horizontal line to (2.5, 12), then draw a straight line down to (3.25, 0).

  3. Ex4 [a]

Lucy is stationary for 30 minutes. The question’s reference to a cyclist appears to be a wording error.

  4. Ex4 [b]

    Walking distance = 4 × 15/60 = 1 mile. Running distance = 8 × 45/60 = 6 miles. She travels 7 miles away from home and 7 miles back, giving 14 miles in total.
