Q1. A database will be made to store information about patients in a hospital. On arrival, each patient personal details (name, address and telephone number are recorded if possible and they are given an admission number. They are then assigned to a particular ward (Accident, Emergency, cardiology, oncology etc). In each ward, there are a number of doctors and nurses. Each patient should have a doctor and several nurses, with the causes of the scale and each doctor and a nurse can be involved in several patients at any given time. From the description, draw a corresponding E-R diagram showing all entity set, attributes, relationship type and cardinality ratio.

Answer

Answer 1:

To create an E-R diagram based on the given description, follow these steps:

  1. Entities:
    • Patient
    • Doctor
    • Nurse
    • Ward
  2. Attributes:
    • Patient: Name, Address, Telephone Number, Admission Number
    • Doctor: Doctor ID, Name
    • Nurse: Nurse ID, Name
    • Ward: Ward ID, Name (e.g., Accident, Emergency, Cardiology, Oncology)
  3. Relationships:
    • Patient is assigned to Ward
    • Patient is treated by Doctor
    • Patient is cared for by Nurse
    • Doctor works in Ward
    • Nurse works in Ward
  4. Cardinality Ratios:
    • Each Patient is assigned to one Ward, but each Ward can have many Patients (1:N)
    • Each Patient is treated by one Doctor, but each Doctor can treat many Patients (1:N)
    • Each Patient is cared for by several Nurses, and each Nurse can care for many Patients (M:N)
    • Each Doctor works in one Ward, but each Ward can have many Doctors (1:N)
    • Each Nurse works in one Ward, but each Ward can have many Nurses (1:N)

Draw the entities as rectangles, attributes as ovals connected to their respective entities, and relationships as diamonds connecting the related entities. Indicate cardinality ratios on the connecting lines.
