Miguel will rent a car for the weekend. He can choose one of two plans. The first plan has an initial fee of $75 and costs an additional $0.30 per mile driven. The second plan has no initial fee but costs $0.80 per mile driven. How many miles would Miguel need to drive for the two plans to cost the same?

Answer

Let x be the number of miles driven. For the first plan, the cost is $75 + $0.30x. For the second plan, the cost is $0.80x. Set the two costs equal to find when they are the same:

$75 + $0.30x = $0.80x

Subtract $0.30x from both sides:

$75 = $0.50x

Divide both sides by $0.50:

x = 150

Miguel would need to drive 150 miles for the two plans to cost the same.
