2. a. What do filters do to light? Complete the diagram to show what happens when light goes through filters. The answer may be 'no light'.
b. Is the light transmitted by a filter brighter than, less bright than, or the same brightness as the light that hits it. Explain your answer.

Answer

1. There are three primary colours of light: blue, red, and green. You can combine these colours to make secondary colours: cyan, magenta, and yellow. All the other colours of the spectrum can be made by mixing different amounts of primary colours. That is why colour television or computer screens are made of segments that emit red, green, and blue light. A filter is made of a material that absorbs one colour of light and transmits the rest of the colours. It is only transparent to one colour of light.

2. a. The diagram shows that when white light passes through a blue filter, it results in cyan light. When white light passes through a red filter, it results in red light. When green light passes through a red filter, there is no light. When red light passes through a magenta filter, it results in red light.

2. b. The light transmitted by a filter is less bright than the light that hits it. This is because the filter absorbs some of the light, allowing only certain wavelengths to pass through, which reduces the overall brightness.
